These lotteries were used to fund the construction of canals, bridges, and libraries. The Academy Lottery, held in 1755, provided money for the University of Pennsylvania, Princeton, and Columbia Universities. Various colonies used lotteries during the French and Indian Wars to fund public projects. In 1758, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts used a lottery to raise money for an “Expedition against Canada”.
